The Witcher 4 Devs on Whether Gwent Will Return: “We Don’t Think Anyone Will be Disappointed”

Though we don't have an explicit confirmation just yet, CD Projekt RED devs seem to have strongly suggested that The Witcher 3's beloved card game will return in its sequel.

The Witcher 4

There’s a long list of reasons for why The Witcher 3 is as beloved as it is, but surely, Gwent has to be high on that list. An elaborate card collecting and battling minigame that spanned the entirety of the experience, Gwent amassed a massive fan following instantly upon The Witcher 3’s release, to the extent that CD Projekt RED would go on to also spin it off into multiple standalone projects.

Recently, the Polish studio officially unveiled The Witcher 4, and naturally, questions about whether the beloved card game will return have already begun popping up. Of course, the game is going to set itself apart from its predecessors in some key ways – a new protagonist being chief among them – though it looks like Gwent will be returning nonetheless.

Asked about the same in a recent interview with Easy Allies, though CD Projekt RED developers did not explicitly confirm that Gwent will be featured in The Witcher 4, they did very strongly suggest it.

“We love it,” said executive producer Gosia Mitręga. “We really love the game, and we also really carefully always listen to the community. This is all we can say, but I don’t think anyone will be disappointed.”

Game director Sebastian Kalemba added: “It’s a part of the experience, right? We also love Gwent.”

Given the massive success that Gwent saw with The Witcher 3 and the standalone spinoffs that it spawned, the omission of Gwent would certainly have been a surprise. The card game has more than its fair share of fans, so its return in the series’ next instalment is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, to put it mildly.

Other details have also emerged on The Witcher 4 since its announcement, with CDPR confirming that its world will be roughly as large as The Witcher 3, revealing details about its combat, promising an even greater emphasis on choice-and-consequence mechanics, and more. Former series protagonist Geralt of Rivia is also set to return, with Doug Cockle voicing him again, though it’s unknown what the extent of his role in the story will be.
