PlayStation VR2 is Getting its Price Reduced to $399.99

A couple of years since its launch, the PlayStation VR2's price is dropping from its original $549.99 price tag from March onwards.

Sony has announced that PlayStation VR2 is getting a price cut. Set to kick in from March onwards, the new price tag for the PlayStation VR2 headset will be $399.99. Curiously, the reduced price of the PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain Bundle is also $399.99.

The base set of the PlayStation VR2 includes a PS VR2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controllers, and a pair of stereo headphones. The Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle also includes the same hardware, along with a redeemable PlayStation Store voucher for the PS VR2-exclusive title Horizon Call of the Mountain.

The decision to have the game-inclusive bundle be the same price as the regular SKU of the PS VR2 is a strange one, and makes the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle look like the obvious choice. The regular PS VR2 headset, on the other hand, looks like a bad deal since it doesn’t come with any premium software.

“With recently released hits like Alien: Rogue Incursion, Skydance’s Behemoth, and Metro Awakening VR, and exciting new game launches on the way including Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk, it’s never been a better time to jump into the action with PS VR2,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis in the announcement post.

“Using the PS VR2 PC Adapter, players will also have access to browse, buy and play thousands of virtual reality games on Steam. Title release dates and regional availability may vary.”

This price cut comes on the heels of the PlayStation VR2 not having done too well in terms of commercial success. The system launched alongside more than 20 titles developed especially for it, but its $549.99 price tag might have played a big role for its lack of general success.

Former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida also spoke about the PlayStation VR2’s lack of success. Yoshida likened the system to the PS2, making use of the momentum built up by the modest success of its predecessor (the PlayStation VR and the original PlayStation in this comparison). However, ultimately, the PS VR 2 wasn’t able to get a similar level of relative success.

“I’m sorry I was wrong – PS VR2 didn’t become PS2,” said Yoshida back in January. When asked further questions about the PlayStation VR2, Yoshida simply responded by saying “Uh, well… let’s move on.”

Since its release, the PlayStation VR2 also got support for PC thanks to an adapter released by Sony. By using this adapter, PS VR2 owners can also play SteamVR titles. The system has also seen quite a few exclusive releases, including a VR mode for Resident Evil 4.

The next major release lined up for the PlayStation VR2 is Hitman World of Assassination. Originally slated for release back in December 2024, Hitman World of Assassination is instead coming to PS VR2 on March 27. Developer IO Interactive spoke about the delay, saying that the decision “was not made lightly”.

“We know there was a lot of demand to bring Hitman on PS VR2, and we were excited to see the great reception following the announcement,” said the studio when the delay was announced. “As such, our priority will always remain to deliver an amazing experience that meets the high standards our players expect.”
