Minecraft Developer Partners with UN Habitat for Regeneration Project

What's that, again? Games are good for nothing?

Posted By | On 26th, Nov. 2012

Mojang, developer of Minecraft, has recently partnered with UN Habitat to model 300 areas around the world as part of a regeneration project. The initiative has been named “Block by Block”, with one of the first areas to be modeled being the Undugu playground, part of the Kibera slum on the outskirts of Nairobi.

These details were recently revealed at the Minecon Conference that took place in Paris on November 24th to 25th.

Residents will be able to take a virtual tour and decide on the overall location, along with changes they’d like to implement and how much money it warrants.

Community liaison manager at Mojang Lydia Winters stated, “We’ll be putting it into the game so people can walk around and feel like it’s as real life as possible. It’s bringing decision makers together with the youth to all decide on this common ground for public spaces around the world.”

Mojang expects to finish modeling these 300 areas by 2016.
